Despite all the tendencies towards the globalisation of journalism, the geography of news broadcasting remains decisive in the sphere of crisis communication. It therefore seems useful to investigate the politico-cultural foundations for different conflict perspectives and their influence on the selection and presentation of news. 32 This balance of forces results from a kind of ‘arms race’ between the contemporary globally networked Arab and Western media worlds, both sides mobilising satellite television channels as ‘weapons of mass 19 A R A B M E D I A A N D P O L I T I C A L R E N E WA L communication’.
