As the particles bombard oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere, the atoms release photons of light that we see as the auroral colors. The details of the science remain uncertain. In 2007, NASA launched the Themis mission to study the interaction between the solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere. The mission hopes to identify which of the several theories connecting solar storms with aurorae might be correct. At time of writing, Themis’s mission has been extended. It could help us unlock the aurora’s secrets.
These are a pair of hot diamonds, two stars of spectral type A ﬁrst separated at the dawn of the age of the telescope. Mizar and Alcor are close to one another, but do they interact? For a long time, we were not sure. Separated by some 3 light years they are traveling at comparable velocities, indicating that they started from a single beginning, and data gathered in 2009 does seem to demonstrate that Alcor is bound to Mizar with an orbital period of some 75,000 years. It is worth remembering this number and then renewing the observation – the tiny gap we can resolve between the stars represents this vast stretch of distance and time.
His chosen site was Abbaseeyeh, 3 miles from Cairo on the edge of the desert.
